Why I love capturing family photos in the home.

I love family photos. I love the real life moments that can be captured within the home. For young families it is the perfect way to capture simple honest moments of your family life that your children can recognise and relate to. When you and your children look back at these moments, they not only recognise the moment in time but the feeling and familiarity of being at home. This is your safe space. This is your fun place. This is where you are all uniquely you and this should be celebrated and documented to look back on over time.

Here’s 5 reasons why you should capture your new baby at home.

1. You can take it easy and relax during a home photo session.

When you have a new baby in the home, you may not feel your best. In fact let’s be honest, you will be tired, you will be a little sore (in more ways than one) and you may not be feeling particularly like you want to pose for a camera. You will however want to capture the little precious details of your newborn. These moments are special and new babies change really quickly. This is where I come in. I come to your home, I capture natural, relaxed moments of you, your partner and children enjoying your newborn and just being you. You do not have to do anything. You just go about your day as you normally would and enjoy being together.

2. Your children can take it easy and relax during a home photo session

This is one for families who have older siblings. Your children can relax. It can be a bit daunting having a strange lady take photos of you with a camera. (I’m not strange honest). The beauty of inviting me to your home to take these photos is that your children can warm up to the situation (I’m very good at building up trust with young children) and there is no rush. If they want to stand back and observe what’s happening for a while, that’s fine. I can just capture some photos of your new baby with mum and dad snuggling on the sofa until they are ready to join in. Trust me, it doesn’t take long until they’re stealing the limelight.

3.Photography is a way of capturing history too

For me, photography is not only about capturing emotion, connection and love but you are also documenting your history. You are capturing where your family live at the time of your new arrival, the style of your home, the fashion and décor of your home. It is the little details that our children notice such as the colour of the rug, the funny shaped lightshade or the dinosaur mugs you all share. These little details are worth capturing too which is why a family session at home is so special.

4. You don’t have to drive anywhere.

Let’s face it, whether you have one child or five children getting out of the house with a newborn is hard work. There are nappies to think about, clothing and feeding times to consider and that’s just for baby. Throw in an older sibling or three and you then have many other balls to juggle. Invite me to your home and you don’t even have to get off the sofa if you don’t want to. Your partner can prepare any snacks for the children, make you a cup of tea and you can just relax. When you have a new baby, you need life to be simple and this is the simple option.

5. Your family photos have more meaning.

When you look back at your photos you and your children will appreciate the feeling of the moment captured on camera. For example, your child will see a photo of you, dad, baby and themselves playing a game, reading their favourite story or sharing a cuddle and they can relate to that photo. The photo isn’t a one off photo. You are capturing a moment that occurs on a regular basis. It is a real life memory which is reinforced through the photo. The moment is of your family in your home, it is unique and special and this in turn boosts self esteem. As explained by David Krauss, a licensed psychologist from Cleveland, Ohio says, “I think it is really important to show a family as a family unit. It is so helpful for children to see themselves as a valued and important part of that family unit. A photographer’s job is to create and make the image look like a safe holding space for kids where they are safe and protected. Kids get it on a really simple level.”
